Moreover, at the end of each section of this review, I will be offering the Samsung NU6950 a rating on a scale of one to ten. Therefore, to get the best out of this review, I implore you to read this review to the end. As a result, you should have sufficient information to make a well-informed buying decision.
My Initial Thoughts
Samsung’s impact on the television market in the past few years is quite remarkable. Known for manufacturing high-quality 4K televisions, Samsung released the NU6950 TV in 2018. The Samsung NU6950 is one of the brand’s mid-range TVs that offers adequate performance comparable to some high-end televisions. More so, this television comes with some amazing features you might not see in most mid-range TVs, such as Auto Motion Plus. However, with a price tag of $899.99 in February 2022 (when I wrote this review), the TV isn’t particularly affordable. Notwithstanding, will the Samsung NU6950’s features meet up to expectations or will it have buyers running from it? Continue with this review to find out.
Samsung NU6950 Design, Dimension, and Weight Review
To start with, the Samsung NU6950 comes with an elegant design. To give more details, the television features an overall slim look as well as slim matte-black plastic bezels. However, the bottom bezel is slightly thicker than the other bezels. The reason for this is for it to accommodate the silver ‘SAMSUNG’ logo positioned at the center. Moving forward, the Samsung NU6950 comes with a pair of ‘T’ shape plastic legs. Impressively, the base of these plastic legs are somewhat curvy, which gives more support to the TV. However, the legs are a bit short, thereby reducing the space underneath the television to place a soundbar. To make things more complicated, due to the setting of the legs, you will need a large table to place the television. Basically, the television’s legs are positioned very near the edges of the TV. Moving to the back, the Samsung NU6950 comes with a simple plastic back panel that has a plain black finish. On this back panel, there are four 400 x 200 VESA mount-compatible holes for mounting the TV. Moreover, due to its slim build, the Samsung NU6950 shouldn’t bulge out of the wall if wall-mounted. Measuring 1457.5 x 59.7 x 837.3 mm (W x D x H) and weighing 25002 g, the Samsung NU6950 is quite slim and lightweight. As a matter of fact, a single person should be able to lift this TV with this amount of weight. However, when compared to its predecessor, the Samsung NU6950 weighs more. To give more details, its predecessor (Samsung NU6900) weighs 21001.3 g and measures 1468 x 89.9 x 854 mm (W x D x H). In conclusion, the Samsung NU6950’s design is quite sleek, but the TV weighs more than its predecessor. Notwithstanding, I will offer the Samsung NU6950 a rating of eight out of ten in this design review section.
Samsung NU6950 Display Features Review
The Samsung NU6950 comes with a 65-inch LCD display that offers a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. This display should deliver clear and detailed picture quality due to its 4K UHD resolution. Adding on to its outstanding 4K resolution, this television’s display has an impressive contrast ratio. To be specific, the display comes with a contrast ratio of 6000:1. For clarity, the contrast ratio is the ratio between the most luminous white and the dimmest black that a display can offer. Moreover, the contrast ratio of a display is the major factor that determines the black level of the display. Basically, if a display has a high contrast ratio, it will be able to render deep blacks. On the contrary, if a display offers a poor contrast ratio, it might not be able to render deep blacks – blacks will look more like gray on the display. Well, as seen above, the Samsung NU6950’s display offers a high contrast ratio. Therefore, the television’s 65-inch 4K display will be able to produce deep blacks. Hence, watching movies in a dark room or movies with a lot of dark scenes will be a joy on the Samsung NU6950. In addition to its impressive contrast ratio, the Samsung NU6900’s display supports local dimming. Local dimming is a technique that a display uses to enhance its contrast ratio. Moreover, this technique involves dimming the backlights behind the display panel. Therefore, with local dimming, blacks will get darker than they would without local dimming. Thus, improving the overall picture quality of the display. That said, to further enhance its picture quality, the Samsung NU6950 comes with an image processing technology called Contrast Enhancer. This image processing technology helps to make bright areas brighter and dark areas darker on a display screen. However, in doing so, this picture technology tends to reduce the details or realisticness of the content viewed on the display. On a positive note, the Samsung NU6950’s display supports several HDR formats. To be more specific, this display supports HDR10, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma), and HDR10+. In case you are wondering, HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a picture technique that enhances the dynamic range of a display. Basically, this picture technique allows a display to render realistic picture quality when viewing HDR-supported content. For the record, HDR-supported content is mostly found on streaming apps such as Netflix and Disney+. Moving forward, the Samsung NU6950’s display has excellent color production capability. To give more detail, this display is capable of producing 100% of the color gamut in the Rec. 709 color space. Consequently, the Samsung NU6950 should be able to display a wide tone of colors in this color space. Wondering what the color gamut is? Color gamut is the range of colors in a particular color space, such as Rec. 709 or sRGB. To further enhance its color production, the Samsung NU6950 comes with the PurColor picture technology. For the record, this picture technology is mainly found on Samsung televisions. Moreover, the PurColor image technology helps a display to express colors in their most realistic form as intended by nature. As a result, the Samsung NU6950 should be able to deliver optimal color accuracy. Unfortunately, as expected from a VA display, the Samsung NU6950’s display has poor viewing angles. Therefore, colors will lose their accuracy when the television is viewed off-center or from extreme angles. Moving on, the Samsung NU6950 is equipped with Auto Motion Plus technology. This technology accounts for the television’s display’s remarkable response time. To give more detail, the Auto Motion Plus enhances the display’s performance when viewing fast-motion scenes. Basically, there will be minimal blur trails when viewing fast-motion content like racing sports and action movies on the Samsung NU6950. In case you are wondering, response time is the amount of time that it takes a display to shift from one color to another. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to discuss the Samsung NU6950’s display’s input lag. This is because getting an accurate value for the display’s input lag proved very difficult. Just for the record, input lag is the time it takes a display to respond to a signal input from an external device. In conclusion, the Samsung NU6950 features quite an impressive display that would offer a premium viewing experience. Besides, this television comes with multiple picture technologies that enhance its display performance. Thus, I will be rating the Samsung NU6950 a nine out of ten in this display review section.
Samsung NU6950 Sound Features Review
To start with, the sound performance of the Samsung NU6950 isn’t particularly good, but it also isn’t bad. To give more details, the television features a pair of down-firing 10-watts speakers, making a total of 20-watts sound output. These speakers produce average sound quality that is ideal for casual viewing. Moreover, the speakers are loud enough to fill a medium-sized room with sound. However, the Samsung NU6950 lacks a subwoofer which basically means bass is almost absent on the television. Therefore, watching bass-heavy movies or playing bass-heavy songs on the Samsung NU6950 may not be a good idea. On a positive note, the Samsung NU6950 comes with Dolby Digital Plus technology to enhance its sound production. Basically, Dolby Digital Plus is an advanced sound technology that allows you to enjoy very clear, vibrant, and deep surround sound. To give more details, the technology gives a cutting-edge surround sound that gives you a cinematic sound experience when viewing the Samsung NU6950. In addition to its outstanding Dolby Digital Plus sound technology, the Samsung NU6950 produces clean and clear dialogue sound. Just to be clear, dialogue sound is the sound generated when multiple characters are having a conversation in a movie or TV show. Sadly, there is a significant amount of distortion when the Samsung NU6950 is at a maximum volume level. Therefore, when viewing loud movies or playing loud songs on the Samsung NU6950, distortion will be a major issue. Notwithstanding, at a moderate volume level, the distortion that the television produces tends to reduce. For clarity, distortion is the deformation of sound frequencies that leads to the production of less appealing sound. To conclude this sound review section, I will rate the Samsung NU6950 a seven out of ten. This rating is due to its average sound performance.
Samsung NU6950 Ports and Connectivity Features Review
When it comes to the ports, the Samsung NU6950 features a minimal number of ports. To make things worse, all of the ports are directly on the television’s back. Therefore, accessing the port when the television is wall-mounted might be difficult. Now that we know where the ports are located, let us discuss the varieties of ports the television feature. To start with, the Samsung NU6950 comes with two HDMI ports. Impressively, one of these HDMI ports supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). As a result, by using that particular HDMI-ARC port, you will be able to connect a soundbar to the television. Asides from its HDMI ports, the Samsung NU6950 also comes with one USB port, a digital optical audio output, and an Ethernet port. That’s all you get in terms of port selection on the Samsung NU6950. Disappointing right? Well, what is even more disappointing is the fact that this television lacks Bluetooth. Thankfully, the Samsung NU6950 comes with an in-built 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WIFI for wireless connectivity. Enough with the frustration about the television’s poor port selection and lack of Bluetooth; now let us discuss the remote control. The Samsung NU6950 comes with a basic remote control (TM1240A). This remote control is made of plastic, is quite long, and features a black finish. Unfortunately, unlike most smart TV remote controls, this remote doesn’t feature dedicated buttons for streaming apps. Also, this remote lacks a built-in microphone that allows voice input. On a positive note, due to the long stature of the remote, there is enough room to accommodate a full number pad. Furthermore, close to the bottom of the remote, you will find a plus-shaped navigation button. Moreover, at the bottom of the remote, there is a “SAMSUNG” inscription for easy brand recognition. In conclusion, the Samsung NU6950 offers a poor amount of ports, and it also lacks Bluetooth. Therefore, I will be rating the Samsung NU6950 a six out of ten in this ports and connectivity review section.
Samsung NU6950 Smart Features Review
The Samsung NU6950 comes with the operating system found in most Samsung smart TVs. To be more specific, this TV comes with the Tizen operating system. This Tizen OS has an easy-to-use interface, also known as the Smart Hub. This Smart Hub features a horizontal tile found at the bottom of the home screen. Moreover, if you ever need more streaming apps, you can simply download them from the Samsung Store. Despite the numerous streaming apps that the Tizen OS offers, you should be able to stream content from your smartphone to the Samsung NU6950. This can only be done with the help of Samsung’s exclusive SmartThings app. Other than streaming content from your smartphone, you can also use the SmartThings app to control the television. Impressively, this SmartThings app is free for download both on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. All in all, I will be rating the Samsung NU6950 a nine out of ten in this smart features review section.
My Final Thoughts
The Samsung NU6950 is a mid-range TV with remarkable features and impressive picture quality. Moreover, this television features several picture technologies, such as Auto Motion Plus and Contrast Enhancer to offer a premium viewing experience. However, this television comes with some major drawbacks that may discourage potential buyers. These drawbacks include poor viewing angles, lack of Bluetooth, and a minimal number of ports. Notwithstanding, if you feel you could cope with these flaws, the Samsung NU6950 is worth considering. I hope you found this Samsung NU6950 review helpful?
