My Initial Thoughts
Honestly, Samsung TVs are one of the best in the world as they come with excellent features and adequate picture quality. Although most Samsung televisions are expensive, they deliver good performances that match their price tags. In that regard, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV – a smart television with a 4K LCD display – was released in 2017. As with most Samsung televisions, this television offers adequate picture quality and a good number of great features. Furthermore, the television comes with the Tizen OS, which gives it access to lots of major streaming services. However, everyone knows that a TV cannot be all perfect. Hence, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with its own fair share of flaws. To find out what these flaws are and more about this television, you need to continue reading.
Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV Design, Dimension, and Weight Review
The Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with an elegant design that could catch your attention at first sight. To start with, the front part of the television features extremely thin bezels that surround the display screen. These bezels come with a matte-black finish and are composed of plastic. Moreover, you will find a white “SAMSUNG” logo at the center of the bottom bezel. This logo not only serves as brand identification but also adds beauty to the television’s front part. Meanwhile, the back of the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV has a plastic back panel. Just like the bezels, this plastic back panel offers a matte-black finish. Also, you will find four VESA 400 x 400 holes on this back panel for mounting the television on the wall. Sadly, unlike some televisions nowadays, the back panel of the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV lacks a cable management system. Therefore, to ensure an organized setup, you will need to manually arrange the cables connected to the television. On the plus side, because the back panel isn’t thick, this Samsung television shouldn’t bulge out when mounted on the wall. What if you don’t feel like mounting the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV on the wall? Well, the TV comes with a V-shaped center stand that is made of plastic with a combination of silver and black finish. Impressively, regardless of its plastic build, this stand is quite robust and allows the television to stand firm. However, when you nudge the TV with force, it tends to wobble a bit. Moving on, let us briefly discuss the dimension and weight of the television. The Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV measures 916.9 x 63.5 x 535.9 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 7711 g. Compared with most 40-inch televisions from different brands, this Samsung TV weighs more. For instance, the TCL 40FS3800 weighs 7057.8 g, and the VIZIO V405-G9 weighs just 6800 g. Hence, to conclude this design review section, I will rate the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV an eight out of ten.
Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV Display Features and Picture Quality Review
The Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV offers a 40-inch LCD display with a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. Due to the 4K UHD resolution, this television’s display should offer sharp images and accurate colors. Besides, 4K UHD displays are way better and sharper than HD or FHD displays. To add to its 4K UHD resolution, this television’s display offers an excellent contrast ratio of 5,768:1. Therefore, the display will be able to produce deep black. Thus, movies that feature plenty of dark/shadowy scenes will be a joy to watch on the television. Also, thanks to the display’s high contrast ratio, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV should offer a pleasing viewing experience when used in a dark room. By the way, the contrast ratio refers to the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks that a display can produce. However, probably because its display already has a high contrast ratio, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV doesn’t support local dimming. For clarity, local dimming is a technique that increases the black level and contrast ratio of an LCD/LED display. It does this by dimming the backlight zones behind the display panel. Hence, with local dimming, blacks on the display will look deeper than they would without local dimming. Thereby improving the dark room performance and overall picture quality of the display. Sadly, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV fails to support local dimming. Although this isn’t a major issue, it would have been a great plus to the display’s features. Moving on, this television’s display offers an average peak brightness of 330 cd/m² (nits). Although this brightness is enough for the TV to perform well in moderate-lit rooms, it isn’t enough for bright areas. This is because the display will be affected by annoying screen glares and reflections. Speaking of reflections, this TV’s display has a semi-gloss coating that combats and reduces the effect of reflections. Hence, using the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV in bright or well-lit areas should be less bothersome. Unfortunately, this television’s display offers poor viewing angles. Thus, the TV isn’t ideal for a large room setting. This is because colors are going to look washed out when watching the television from the sides or off-center. On the bright side, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV supports HDR (High Dynamic Range). Briefly, HDR is a picture technique that improves the brightness and color accuracy of a display. Thus, when watching HDR-supported content on the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV, the picture quality is going to look really realistic and life-like. To start with, this television’s display offers a decent response time of 18.7 milliseconds. Thus, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV is a good choice for watching fast-moving content as there will be minimal blur trails. In brief, response time is the time that it takes a display to transition from one particular color to another. Regrettably, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV’s display offers a poor input lag of 20.2 milliseconds. Briefly, input lag is how fast a display responds to a signal input from external sources such as a wireless gamepad. Furthermore, for a TV to be considered good for gaming, its display must have an input lag of 15 ms or less. As you can see above, the input lag of the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV’s display is more than 15 ms. Hence, this Samsung television isn’t an ideal choice for gamers. In conclusion, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV offers a decent display performance but features some questionable flaws. Some of these flaws include poor viewing angles and average peak brightness. Nevertheless, the television’s 4K UHD display supports HDR and has an impressive contrast ratio. Therefore, I will be rating the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV an eight out of ten in this display review section.
Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV Sound Features Review
For the sound department, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with a pair of 20-watt speakers. These speakers are fairly loud and should be able to fill a large room with sound. Aside from being loud, the speakers can also produce crisp and clear dialogue. For clarity, dialogue means the conversation between two or more individuals in a movie or TV show. Unfortunately, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV lacks a subwoofer. Thus, the television’s speakers will not be able to produce adequate bass. As a result, this television isn’t ideal for watching bass-heavy movies. However, if you are the types that love bass-heavy movies or music, you can buy a soundbar with this TV to improve the bass production. Moving on, in order to improve the sound quality and production of its speakers, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV features Dolby Audio. Dolby Audio is a sound technology that enhances the loudness and surround sound production of the television’s speakers. As a result, the speakers will be able to generate an immersive and cinematic sound quality. That said, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV has an amazing distortion performance. This is evident via the 0.242% score achieved by the television on a THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test. THD is a sound test that calculates the amount of distortion that a sound system is capable of producing. Furthermore, according to this test, if the sound system scores 1% or less, it produces minimal distortion. However, if the score is above 1%, that indicates that the sound system can generate a significant amount of distortion. Gladly, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV’s score on the THD test is way below 1%. Thus, either at a maximum or moderate volume level, distortion won’t be an issue for this television. In case you are curious, distortion in this context is the alteration of frequencies generated by a sound device. Thereby making the sound device deliver unwanted noises and disturbing sound quality. In conclusion, apart from its lack of a subwoofer, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV offers a brilliant sound performance. Thus, I will rate the television an eight out of ten in this sound review section.
Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV Ports and Connectivity Features Review
Like most Samsung televisions, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with a decent number of ports. Besides, all the ports are located on the right side of the television. Therefore, whether the television is standing or wall-mounted, users will be able to easily access the ports. Having said that, let us discuss the various kinds of ports that the television features. To start with, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with three HDMI ports and two USB ports. It is important to mention that one of these HDMI ports supports ARC (Audio Return Channel). Thus, with the help of that HDMI-ARC ports, you will be able to easily connect a soundbar to the television. That aside, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV features one digital optical audio out, a composite video input, and an Ethernet port. Meanwhile, for wireless connectivity, this TV offers built-in 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth. Moving on, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with a TM1750A remote control. This remote control has a plastic chassis with a matte-black finish. However, the remote offers a limited amount of buttons. Among the few buttons on the remote are a ring-shaped navigation button and a microphone button for voice commands. Nevertheless, there is a beautiful white “SAMSUNG” inscription sitting at the down part of the remote. All things considered, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV deserves an eight out of ten rating in this ports and connectivity review section.
Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV Smart Features Review
The Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with the Tizen operating system that has a UI (user interface) called the Smart Hub. This Smart Hub interface has smooth animation and an easy-to-use navigation system. Impressively, the operating system also has a built-in apps store called the Samsung Store. Hence, via this app store, you can download more applications and streaming services of your choice. That aside, with an application called the SmartThing app, you should be able to share content from your smartphone to the TV. For your information, this SmartThing app is free for download on the App Store and Google Play Store. In conclusion, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV comes with a brilliant operating system that offers a smooth interface and plenty of applications. Therefore, I will be rating the television a nine out of ten in this smart features review section.
My Final Thoughts
The Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV is a smart television that offers an adequate LCD 4K display with decent performance. Furthermore, the display of this television has a high contrast ratio and supports HDR. Besides, the television delivers an impressive sound performance and offers a voice-supported remote control. Also, as a Samsung smart TV, this television employs the Tizen OS that gives it access to numerous applications and streaming services. However, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV offers poor viewing angles and average peak brightness. Additionally, the television isn’t good for gamers as its display doesn’t have a low input lag. Nevertheless, apart from these few setbacks, the Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV is actually impressive and worth considering. I hope you found this Samsung 40 Inch 4k TV review helpful.
